Wedding Wednesday: Reception Decor

I've been doing a few posts here and there about my wedding inspiration. Even though I've only got a few more weeks (45 days to be exact), I'm still nailing down a lot of this stuff (wedding planning is exhausting, bee tee dubs) and I wanted to create an easier/consistent way of doing that on my blog. 

Ladies & gentlemen, may I introduce you to 'Wedding Wednesday' 

Each Wednesday, I'll post something wedding related. It might be Q&A, something funny that happened that week, or in this weeks case: inspiration. 

Our reception site changed since I last talked about the wedding and we decided to save mucho $$$ and have the reception at one of the LDS cultural halls down in Provo. While I'm all for saving money, I do have to admit that I looked at that darn wooden basketball floor and hoops and said "Uhm. Well. How am I going to make this look cute?" At first I was really discouraged and wasn't sure I was going to be able to make it look cute. Oh how wrong I was. 

Thank you Google. (Speaking of Google & the interwebs...congress, can we please not censor the internet so panicking brides like me can be reassured that it's possible to make a basketball court cute? I'm sure we'd all appreciate it. Thanks). I'm still going for the vintage shabby chic vibe...without the barn though.

My inspiration for the reception decoration came from this photo. I found it a few weeks back and loved the simplicity and understated elegance. Sure, there aren't fancy place settings and the floor is a basketball court but the decorations draw your attention away from the things that might hinder the over impact and after a while you forget you're in a cultural hall. 


What are your opinions on wedding receptions? Do you want to have a relaxed reception that is really casual or are you more of the formal black-tie affair type?

(note: please don't think I'm bashing cultural hall receptions. I'm not. I'm only pointing out my own flawed thinking and misconceptions. I think LDS receptions in a laid back casual atmosphere that the cultural hall brings tend to be amazing and sweet and all sorts of fun.)

Wedding Inspiration: Invitations!

Now that my first batch of invitations are finally out (Our Michigan ones will be going out a little later, since that reception isn't until May), I wanted to share our invitations! While I didn't make these, they ARE indeed hand made by a very very very talented and dear friend of mine, Kylie McGeoch. She has her own custom card making business called Once Upon A Card and is really talented! 

Since she's in Canada and I'm in Utah, all of our communication was through texting and emailing but she is just wonderful about doing what I wanted but still making it look good. She got ideas from what our theme was and went to work. All in all, she HAND MADE 200 sets of invitations (the main brown card announcing the wedding, 2 sets of reception cards, and the RSVP cards.) All of them were, like I said, hand made, and just wonderful. 

I am so very happy with my invitations and so very happy we decided to have Kylie do them for us.

We're artistic (kinda) and Todd loves Charlie

For Christmas, Todd's sister got us a giftcard to a place in Provo where you can paint your own dishes, home decor, and other stuff. I've done it before but Todd hadn't. We both got matching mugs and got to work. As you can see, we're pretty much the next Picasso and Rembrant. 

Later that week, after I got home from the hospital, (good news: no apendicitis. bad news: kidney stone waiting to attack. Sigh. So is my life) Todd and Charlie had some bonding time. I'm glad my boys seem to be getting along (I didn't include the pictures of Charlie's butt in Todd's face. I decided to save Charlier the embarrassment.)

Oh. And I can now cross "Ride in an ambulance" off my bucket list. I wish I didn't but...again...so is my life.

This Girl = Amazing

This video couldn't have come into my life at a more opportune moment. Heavenly Father sure works in funny ways doesn't he?

I discovered the amazingness that is Al Fox tonight. I watched her video of a letter to the Missionary that helped her covert to the Church first. Then I discovered she had a lot of videos posted (yay!) and I watched those. THEN I discovered she had a blog. (double yay!) and I've now been reading her blog for the past hour or so. 

She is the sweetest girl and is such an amazing example. Her latest post on the different journals she uses for different things is...genius...seriously.

Coming home from work to a clean apartment courtesy of the best fiance ever. 

Roses on the table. 

Back up dinners of beef stroganoff because I forgot eggs. 

Rice krispie treats (YUM).

New Years kisses at 10pm because I was too tired to wait for midnight Utah time.

Christmas Rewind

Squash. On the ceiling. We didn't discover it until AFTER dinner too. 

I finally got around to uploading my pictures from Christmas. This isn't all of them, just the ones I took after Christmas morning with my brand spankin new Nikon d50 camera that I'm slightly in love with. And by slightly, I mean Todd might have a little competition now. ;) kidding!
